This Saturday, July 13th, the Similkameen BBQ King event will be held at the historic Grist Mill in Keremeos from 5 to 9pm. I attended this event last year and had a great time (and was SO full of delicious food and wine by the end of the evening); I am eagerly awaiting Saturday’s arrival. The nine wineries that make up the Similkameen Wineries’ Association (Cerelia, Clos du Soleil, Eau Vivre, Forbidden Fruit, Orofino, Robin Ridge, Rustic Roots, Sage Bush and Seven Stones) will each be partnered with a chef who will create some amazing food to be paired with a wine from that winery. Each chef has the same ingredients from a “black box” with which to work, so it’s always interesting to see how different the dishes can be from the same pile of locally-sourced organic meat and produce. This year’s chefs are:

Chris Van Hooydonk (BBQ King 2011) from Artisan Culinary Concepts

Karl Schorb from the Branding Iron

Derek Uhlemann from Covert Farms

Ross Derrick from the Delta Grand Okanagan

Greg Fuchs (BBQ King 2012) from Gregor’s Gourmet

Natasha Schooten from Terrafina Restaurant

Justin Paakkunainen from Walnut Beach Resort

Jonas Stadtlander from Watermark Beach Resort

Marianne Abraham of the Whitewater Cooks team

In addition to these amazing chefs, there will also be some delicious appetizers from Benja Thai to enjoy! There will also be live entertainment by Karen Fowlie, an acclaimed entertainer from Horseshoe Bay who will be performing her spirited acoustic rock.  Karen has been acknowledged by BC’s Attorney General and has opened for the classic-rock band Trooper. There will also be a silent auction that is a partial fundraiser for the Grist Mill, which is a Heritage BC site. DSC_3348
